Welcome, fellow lovers of written words!
This group has been created to make a collection of traditional calligraphy pieces here, on DeviantArt. We want to concentrate on European art of illumination, which seems to be almost forgotten nowadays. Here everyone looking for it will be able to find it.
Please, contribute to the galleries, if you do calligraphy, or suggest favourites, if you see anything interesting.
Here are a few rules to keep the galleries neat and tidy:
Gallery submissions: only
traditional calligraphy pieces are allowed
we are looking for European calligraphy (i.e. Latin alphabet). Why? Mainly because there are many groups focused on typography, but European calligraphy is hard to find. It is easy to find Islamic or Japanese, or other Eastern typography, yet European languages seem to be unappreciated.
please submit only your own pieces to the gallery folders. The folders are as follows:
-
Long texts – texts longer than one sentence
-
Phrases – one sentence or one word pieces
-
Initials – single decorated letters
submit finished works, that you are proud of. I understand that not everyone has access to a scanner, but I will not accept pieces that are blurred or in other ways unclear on the screen.
submissions to the “Featured” folder are not allowed – here I will put the best works found in the gallery.
Favourites submissions: here you can submit works that are not yours, yet are linked to traditional calligraphy.
the Favourites can be described as collection of inspirations and generally useful “stuff”
The folders are as follows:
-
Featured – texts/phrases/initials – any traditional calligraphy pieces.
-
Tutorials – if you find any good tutorial (e.g. how to write with left hand, how to make Celtic knots, etc.), please share it
-
Stock – borders, background, etc. Sometimes the scan does not show the texture of the paper on which the text was written, and a background has to be added on computer. Should we call it cheating? Well… perhaps.
Also, the borders are good inspirations.
-
Pretty patterns – self-explanatory, I guess
, Celtic knots, medieval flourishes, anything you feel is related, although it does not have text on it.
if you suggest a favourite of a group member’s artwork, don’t worry, I’ll move it to the main gallery.
I hope you will enjoy the group
